Another troubling winner, Irv. Our oldest grandson graduates from Glenbrook North in 2 weeks. He'll start his college career overseas ... exposed to a lot of wealthy people, diverse cultures and other smart, hungry students from 120 or more countries. We're anxious of what the next 4-8 years look like. Hoping he has a backbone, wisdom and mature insights beyond his years and the protective cocoon of growing up in Northbrook to thrive and make a difference..
Your pessimism mirrors mine, Irv; it quite possibly outweighs mine. The small things I'm trying to do for a better world are all too little and probably too late. And as a natural introvert (really; seriously; not kidding) I have to fight my urge to cocoon, stick my fingers in my ears, and go "la-la-la-I-can't-HEAR-you." But it has to be done.
You are correct that those students who have just graduated college have gone through a brutal couple of years. But who hasn't suffered from COVID? Kindergarteners in fall of 2019, who have had to deal with virtual school and masks and social distancing, meaning being prevented from getting close to their fellow students. High schoolers. Performers of any age. Old folks trying to live out their golden years, but haven't been able to see their grandchildren. And George Floyd Square looks like a horrible place. But where has all that money paid out to his family and lawyers gone? Wouldn't it be appropriate if some of it went to George Floyd Square, to make future "George Floyds" lives better?
"They stick to their guns more than the smart people. Literally." That is the problem.

Brutal but honest
